Frequently Asked Questions

When can I return to work after hip replacement?

The Solution:

You will probably feel ready to go back to work after 3 months or so, but it’s important to be sure that you’re fully rested. Tiredness is one of the main reasons why you might wish to postpone your return to work after hip replacement. Most people find that they are tired for several weeks following surgery and it can affect your ability to concentrate. You need to focus on your rehabilitation, and not let the demands of your job could get in the way of your daily exercises and progress.

When can I drive after hip replacement?

Answer:

Hip replacement surgery is a major operation and so there are, understandably, restrictions on what you can and can’t do during the healing process. For example, you should avoid driving after hip replacement surgery. Major hip surgery adversely affects reaction times – it is therefore recommended that you refrain from driving for 4-6 weeks.

We recommend that you avoid journeys longer than an hour for at least 6 weeks. This is because your hip will feel uncomfortable and stiff. If you must travel, it’s important that you take regular breaks for about 10-15 minutes.

When can I fly after hip replacement?

Answer:

Most airlines advise that you avoid air travel for at least 3 months after surgery. This is due to the increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

When can I have sex after hip replacement?

Answer:

This has been a bit of a taboo subject for patients and surgeons alike. Most surgeons would advise that it is safe to have sex six weeks after a hip replacement, but care should be taken to avoid extreme movements and positions.

When can I return to playing sports after hip replacement?

Answer:

We understand that hip replacement surgery is a big step forward in terms of improving your quality of life. You’ll be keen to start enjoying activities and leisure again, free from the daily aches and pains. Patients often ask us about when they can expect to return to sports after hip replacement, but this really depends on the sport in question.

Low impact sports

Most people find they can pick up a golf club or start sailing after around 3-6 months. For other sports, we recommend that you discuss your plans with your surgeon.

Contact sports

You will not be able to play contact sports after hip replacement surgery. However, lots of our patients play tennis and badminton and some even return to skiing after hip surgery.
